Building valuable Skills

Everybody is obsessed with building a career but nobody is focused on starting small. We live in a society that don’t value skills, because many people tend to focus more on the result rather than paying close attention to the process of achieving good result, which is building valuable skills.

Skills like catering, fashion design, photography, make up, interior decoration etc. can add value to life. When such skills are developed efficiently, they begin to speak for themselves and your environment feels the impact. Many people want to get big more than they want to become good. But they tend to forget that life is in stages, it is very important to take one step at a time. Good things take time.

At Enovate Lab we target startups and small businesses with the aim of taking them to the next level, we believe in empowering them to make impact both locally and globally. We also train individuals to identify and focus on small problems and then use the skills they develop to solve bigger challenges.

We understand that building great and valuable skills is quite demanding and takes time.  Yet do not give up trying, the more creative you are the more skillful and diverse you will be. Try to see things differently, develop better skills, build your skills, and be creative. As Richard Templar said, “Once you can do what no one else can do, you can pretty well name your price”.

Developing Effective Communication Skills

As entrepreneurs, communication skills are very important in our day to day business activities. The ways we establish positive relationship determine our success in business. Many people communicate but not everybody can communicate effectively.

Effective communication is about getting your message across clearly and kindly, so that the recipient know just what you mean and can respond in similar clarity. Communication skills create positive image of you and your company which will attract better business relationships, it help you not to overlook information that may be crucial for making better business decision, it also reduce the risk of misunderstanding customers and make people you work with feel at ease.

Steps to develop effective communication skills

Clarity – have a proper understanding of what you are about to communicate, to avoid being misunderstood by your customers.

Politeness – courtesy in your manner of approach to people, the way you address people matters in business, be careful of how you use your words.

Consideration – always put the interest of your customers at heart, make sure they are satisfied.

Bridle your tongue – be careful with the way you talk, because great deal is conveyed in just few words, try to be brief and straight to the point; More of action less talk.

Entrepreneurs need to focus on building effective communication skills, which is essential for developing good relationship that will lead to the achievement of organizational goals and objectives. We cannot always build the future but we can build effective communication skills for our business.

Letter To The Entrepreneur and Business Owner

 Dear entrepreneur

Change is the only constant thing. Few years ago, an average young person goes to school, study hard and hope to graduate with a good grade so he can easily secure a great job. Business was a low life job of the unfortunate who could not afford to go to school. Over the years, this has changed. Young people are now encouraged not to sit idly waiting for white collar jobs, rather they should learn a skill/trade and start something on their own. So many institutions and even the government are constantly giving grants to encourage more people starting on their own business. Therefore entrepreneurship is the new trend. Even young secondary leavers are venturing into it and are making great waves. As with every trend, whosoever is not an entrepreneur seem to be the odd one.

Dear entrepreneur, you are on the right path. Here are some little words I would leave with you as you continue on this great journey.

Always have the end in mind. Do not just venture into anything because that is what everyone is doing. Set a goal for yourself and business and draw up a plan on how you intend to achieve them. This way you can always measure your success and not get worn out trying to keep up with others.

Remember that failure does not mean an idea is not good or an idea will not work. It simply means there is a better way to do it. So when you experience failure or setbacks, learn the lesson and move on. Do not give up and do not become bitter.

Cooperation is the new competition. You will achieve more when you work with others in your field than you will when you work alone. The 21st century entrepreneur is not the man who does everything to pull other down. He is the man who seeks to empower others so that together they can achieve more.

You are in business to serve others and not just to enrich yourself. If you understand this, you will treat your customer with respect and stay innovative. By thinking of how best to serve your customer, you will remain innovative. This will give an edge in your chosen field.

Before I forget, remember that success is a process and not a destination. If you only aim to attain a particular position in life, you will be limiting yourself. Dream big, be open minded. Sometimes when a door open, it is not for you to stay in. it could only be a passage to the other side.  Therefore, never settle for less than you can achieve. You are more capable than you think.

There is so much to say, but the few can serve for now. Be positive; believe the best, expect the best. Be consistent ;little drops of water make a large ocean.

We Organized A Three Days Photocamp For Photographers In Kano

As part of our mission to tackle local challenges, we realized that there is a need for a new crop of photographers who will tell counter narrative stories about activities and events in our society. While the majority of the photographers we have mostly do weddings and portraits. There are not many photographers in other fields like documentary, landscape, product photography and the likes. So we decided to bring upcoming photographers and enthusiast together for three a days Photocamp that will teach them skills on photography from its most basic forms.

Planning the program was an amazing experience for us as a team, we were thrilled to put together the first of its kind, three days Photocamp in Kano. We reached out to some professional photographers and partners who share our vision for the project. Along the line, Global Shapers Community Kano which is an initiative of World Economic Forum sponsored thirteen (13) upcoming photographers to our Photocamp. We eventually had 28 participants who were very keen and passionate to spend three days with us. So on April 20th, 2018 Photocamp Kano was launched by our Managing Partner Mr Ahmed Idris who is also a documentary photographer.

The first day was basically about learning camera settings and controls, lens and lighting. These featured teachings using natural lighting, flash and nature photography. The second day was more practical as we had a photowalk to some historic places in Kano. The idea was to have fun and interact while learning. We visited Gidan Makama which is a National Museum, and then we stopped at Gidan Dan Hausa, the oldest building in northern Nigeria. We took to the streets and had sessions on street photography before having launch together at a restaurant. We then moved to Kano Dye Pit, a place that has being standing for over 500 years. Our last stop was at Dala Hills (Dutsen Dala) the first settlement in Kano. We ended the day exhausted but very fulfilled.

On the last day, we took participants on how to edit the pictures they took during the second day. We introduced them to Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. We also had professional and renowned photographers follow us in the photowalk and also give talks on the business side of photography. We ended the Photocamp in style as each participant was awarded a certificate. Photocamp Kano will go down in the history of Kano as a project that united and gave the photography community in Kano the much needed boosts. We are proud to have put together something that not only provided access to the right knowledge but also motivated people to take positive actions and build careers that will help sustain themselves, their families and the society.
